In July, Ben had a four day training for AP Biology in Phoenix. We decided we would tough the hot weather and head down together as a family. Boy was it hot...112, 114 degrees while we were there. But, despite the heat we had a great time! Our hotel was awesome it had a Bluetooth speaker built into the bathroom mirror, breakfast, a nice fitness center, and a great pool. We got to swim three times and enjoyed the water. Our first full day in Phoenix Ben went to his training and we went to one of our favorite places. Butterfly Wonderland.
They were all decorated with the book, "The Hungry Caterpillar." We start off by watching the 3D Monarch Butterfly movie. Both the girls were old enough to actually keep their 3D glasses on. They were so cute trying to catch and hold the butterflies flying in the movie. Then after the movie we got to see butterflies in the conservatory.
Jocelyn really wanted a butterfly to hand on her. Some came close, but would just fly right on by. Bridget on the other hand who is the opposite of Jocelyn does not enjoy bugs much. She was even a little timid to get close to a resting butterfly for a picture.
We tell Jocelyn that she is going to be an Entomologist when she grows up because of how much she loves bugs. She is always out looking for potato bugs in our backyard. She goes out and catches lady bugs, crickets, grasshoppers, worms, and caterpillars and just picks them up like it is nothing. One day when I was weeding she was playing with a caterpillar. She ran over to me and told me she had lost the caterpillar. We looked all around where she had been and could not find it. We figured it had moved on. Well quite a while later she calmly walked over to me and said she felt something crawling on her neck just below her hair line. She reached up and by golly there was the caterpillar!
We had a great time looking at the butterflies and the fish pond. But, it sure was hot and we were sticky. We were excited to be back in the air conditioning.
They had actually expanded their indoor exhibits since we have last visited. They had a large area with reptiles, amphibians, and bugs. We got to look at Madagascar cockroaches, see scorpions glow in the black light, and check out their aquarium.
I was a little nervous venturing out all week by myself. But, it was a great first day of our trip and these little girls were perfect angels.
